He stood at the edge of the boat, ready to make the jump and dive in. His heart beat hard in his chest, his excitement almost making him fly, but the heavy diving gear kept him anchored. He'd waited so long for this moment.

He was always interested in the sea and its depths, wishing to know more and more about it, but his life path really only solidified when he saved that mermaid. She was such a small, scrawny thing, trashing on the rocks, slowly suffocating in the clean air with no way to get back into the water. He helped her, got her back in her homeland barely in time, and then knew that he must do everything in his power to follow her there.

He went to the proper schools, took the proper training, and now here he was. A scuba diver, a marine biologist, a sociologist, who got to discover the world and society of mermaids. He would get to see her again, too, maybe.

He took a step forward and plunged into the water, the bubbles at first obscuring his view, but as he slowly sank in deeper, he started to see more clearly. His breathing slowed, doing his best to conserve the limited amount of oxygen he was carrying with himself. His team jumped in as well, one by one, and then they started their descent.

The city of the mermaids came into view slowly. The spiraling buildings, the softly chiseled rocks, the beautiful corals that decorated everything, and of course, the graceful creatures swimming along the plentiful fish, their fins colorful and no two alike. Tears sprung to eyes at the sight, the bliss of having reached his goal, and that for a few hours, he got to be part of her world.
