Once upon a time there was the Sun, entrusted with the protection of life, given a little corner of the universe to rule as he saw fit. The Sun was young and blazing with intensity, eager to finally have his own set of planets like many of his brothers and sisters, but he was not prepared what it would mean to finally have this gift. So far in his existence, his companions were only other stars, burning with the same fire they all have been made of, but now he was among planets and comets and asteroids, and he had to face his own destructive power.
The first few planets he only scorched, weeping more fire as he saw life burn away on those precious globes. Smaller things, like asteroids and even some moons, his fire swallowed whole like they had never existed. The Sun burned with the shame and pain of this destruction, but then as he calmed he could see that further planets were safe from him, and Earth even blossomed into a beautiful planet full of life. The Sun wished he could touch it and be close to it, bask in the companionship of existence like how the Earth basked in his sunlight, but to go closer would've meant destroying it. So, the Sun stayed away, and years and years passed in this lonely existence.
The Earth, however, had a tiny Moon. She reflected the light from the Sun so beautifully, and among all the planets and moons and asteroids, the Sun liked watching her the most. Her light was soothing and gentle, taming the blazing fire that had destroyed so many before.
"I have seen you weeping, Sun. Why are you sad? Do you miss your brothers and sisters so much?" the Moon asked, then pondered. "I never had any siblings, unlike other moons. I wouldn't know what it's like."
"I'm sad because I have been entrusted this little piece of the universe, but other than existing here, in my place, unmoving for eternity, there's nothing I can do. You were not here at the dawn of my rule, when planets melted at my fingertips, when moons like you became nothing just from my closeness. I destroy everything I touch, dear Moon. I thought this responsibility would be a gift, but this is just an eternity of loneliness until the day I grow cold and die. I hope a better star will take my place, then," told the Sun of his misery.
"We were all young, once. You were ready to rule without knowing what it would mean, and it is an understandable fault. You made a mistake, but you have spent hundreds of thousands of years making up for it. You are lonely and miserable, and yet you chose to stand still and let the world revolve around you, giving up your happiness for their life. You are a good star, and this universe will mourn greatly when you are gone," consoled the Moon.
"Will those lives I guard be enough to make up for all that I have destroyed?" the Sun asked with rising hope. The Moon smiled, reflecting his light back even brighter.
"It was enough a long time ago. It is now only your guilt keeping you chained. You believe that you destroy everything you touch - maybe at the beginning you did, but you have changed. Let me prove it to you."
Without waiting for an answer, the Moon launched through space and enveloped the Sun in a gentle hug. She was a tiny Moon, and yet once she returned to her rightful place at the side of the Earth, she seemed to be untouched by the blazing fire of the Sun. The Sun beamed in wonder to see the little Moon unhurt, and sent some particularly warm rays towards the Earth.
From that day on, the Moon became a close friend to the Sun, and every once in a while, when she was able to, sneaked away from her post of guarding the Earth to give him a hug. The humans eventually named these occurences 'solar eclipse'.
